CERN Open Hardware License – Strongly Reciprocal (CERN OHL-S 2.0)
Modified for 3D Data Models and Modular Use
Preamble
This license applies to modular 3D data models designed for urban farming and related creative uses. It is based on the CERN Open Hardware License – Strongly Reciprocal (CERN OHL-S 2.0) and has been adapted to include specific provisions for 3D data models and modular designs.
By using the Licensed Material, you accept and agree to comply with this license.
1 Definitions
1.1 Licensed Material
Licensed Material: The original and derivative digital 3D data files (e.g., STL, STEP) intended for manufacturing physical parts, as governed by this license and based on the CERN Open Hardware License – Strongly Reciprocal (CERN OHL-S 2.0).
1.2 Source Material
Editable digital files (e.g., CAD files) used to create 3D-printable or other derivative files.
1.3 Covered Work
Any reproduction, modification, or distribution of the Licensed Material or derivatives.
2 Rights Granted
Subject to the conditions of this license, you are granted the following rights:
2.1 Use: You may use the Licensed Material for any purpose, including personal, commercial, and research applications.
2.2 Modify: You may modify the Licensed Material.
2.3 Distribute: You may distribute the Licensed Material, including modified versions, provided the conditions in Section 3 are met.
3 Conditions
3.1 Open-Sourcing Derivatives
If you modify or combine the Licensed Material with other components, you must:
Distribute the modified Licensed Material under the same license.
Ensure all derivative files, including modular combinations, remain open-source.
3.2 Editable File Distribution
When distributing the Licensed Material or derivatives:
Provide both editable digital files (e.g., CAD files) and any compiled formats (e.g., STL or STEP).
Ensure that users can access and further modify the distributed files.
3.3 Attribution
You must give appropriate credit to the original authors of the Licensed Material in any distribution, reproduction, or modification.
3.4 Patent Prohibition
You may not apply for or enforce any patents on the Licensed Material, its derivatives, or any combinations thereof.
4 Disclaimer of Liability
The Licensed Material is provided “as is,” without warranty of any kind. The authors are not liable for any damages resulting from its use.
5 Applicability to Larger Systems
The Licensed Material may be used within proprietary systems, provided that:
The Licensed Material and any modified components remain open-source.
The larger proprietary system does not restrict access to the Licensed Material.
6 Termination
Violation of the conditions in this license results in the termination of your rights to use, modify, or distribute the Licensed Material.
7 Attribution to Original License
This license is based on the CERN Open Hardware License – Strongly Reciprocal (CERN OHL-S 2.0). The original text of the CERN OHL-S 2.0 license can be found here: https://spdx.org/licenses/CERN-OHL-S-2.0.html.
This adaptation introduces specific provisions for modular 3D data models, including:
a) Explicit inclusion of digital 3D model files (e.g., STL, STEP) as Licensed Material.
b) Editable file requirements for distributed derivatives.
c) Provisions ensuring modular designs and derivatives remain open-source.
All other terms of the original CERN OHL-S 2.0 license apply.
